Nutritional Psychiatry

Whole-person psychiatric care

How You Eat Is Part of the Mental Health Picture.

Nutritional psychiatry explores how eating patterns, food quality, and metabolic health relate to mental health. At Balanced Mind Mental Health, nutrition is considered alongside your symptoms, medications, daily routines, and overall health.

Nutrition-focused support is incorporated into psychiatric care and is not offered as a stand-alone service.

What the Research Shows

Research links healthier dietary patterns, including Mediterranean-style eating, with lower rates of depression. Clinical trials also suggest that improving diet quality may help reduce depressive symptoms for some individuals. Nutrition-focused care complements appropriate psychiatric treatment and does not replace it.

What Nutrition-Focused Support May Include

Eating Patterns and Daily Habits

  • Whole-food, plant-predominant eating patterns, including Mediterranean-style approaches
  • Regular meals and how eating habits relate to mood and energy
  • Practical ways to improve food quality and reduce highly processed foods and added sugars
  • Hydration, caffeine, and alcohol
  • Nutrition habits that support sleep and focus

Medication and Metabolic-Health Considerations

Some psychiatric medications can affect appetite, weight, blood sugar, or cholesterol. When relevant to your treatment, we review these changes, arrange appropriate monitoring, and coordinate with your other providers.

Laboratory Testing and Supplement Review

  • Review or ordering of laboratory tests when a nutritional deficiency or other medical contributor is suspected
  • Review of supplements for safety and possible medication interactions

Nourishment and the Balanced Mind Framework™

Nourishment is one of the five elements of the Balanced Mind Framework™. Our approach draws on evidence-based lifestyle medicine principles, emphasizing whole-food, plant-predominant eating patterns, including Mediterranean-style approaches.

Nutrition-focused education is incorporated into psychiatric visits and emphasizes practical, sustainable changes that fit your health needs, preferences, culture, budget, and daily routine.
